 Virginia created Mercer County, the 6th county formed in Kentucky in 1785, before Kentucky became a state. It was named to honor General Hugh Mercer, a Scotsman who was killed in the American Revolution. Anderson, Jessamine, Boyle, Garrard, Washington and Woodford counties covering 250 square miles border it today. Harrodsburg, the first permanent pioneer settlement in Kentucky, is the county seat. Mercer County was the site for several unique communities and institutions during the 19th century. Shakers built a large and prosperous community at Pleasant Hill (1805-1910). It was also home for the first meeting house of the Dutch Reformed Church west of the Allegheny Mountains, in 1800. It was called the Old Mud Meeting House. McAfee Station was an early settlement established in 1779 by the McAfee, Curry, McGee and McGoun families.
The region is well suited for growing grains and supporting livestock. Construction of the Dix River Dam and electric generating plant was completed in 1925 and Herrington Lake was created. Primarily an agricultural region, the industrial base of Mercer County expanded to include the production of clothing, metal, glass and heating and refrigeration items. Fort Harrod was reconstructed in 1927 and dedicated to the struggles and hardships of the pioneers.*
